A Warren man is in jail after allegedly robbing a gas station in Cortland Monday, February 27.

According to a police report, police were dispatched to Valley View Food Mart on South High Street just before 10:00 p.m. Monday in reference to a robbery.

Upon arrival, store employees told police that the suspect, later identified as 22-year-old Tyler Sharp purchased a cigar with cash and left the store.

Police say Sharp quickly returned to the store asking when it closed. When employees told him the store was in the process of closing, Sharp allegedly asked them if they "knew the law" and said they could not touch him.

After Sharp was asked to leave the store, police say he told employees that he had guns and reached into his backpack causing the employees to flee. Sharp allegedly opened the CBD container, stuffed various items in his backpack and fled the store on foot.

Employees told police they did not physically confront Sharp due to fears after he stated he had a gun.

Police say Sharp went to multiple stores that night including Walgreens and a Speedway gas station. After viewing surveillance video and speaking with witnesses, police were able to positively identify Sharp.

According to the police report, officers located Sharp in an apartment complex, detained him and recovered the stolen merchandise. Sharp told police he did not actually have a gun and only said he did so the employees would not try to defend themselves.

He also told police he had been in and out of prison all his life and that he had been making a living selling drugs in Warren. Police say Sharp was on parole at the time of the robbery.

After searching the apartment Sharp was staying at, no firearm was found.

According to police Sharp said he did not intend to commit a robbery that night, but after he purchased the cigar, he noticed CBD products on display in the store and decided he wanted to steal them.

Sharp is currently in the Trumbull County Jail and is charged with one count of robbery.
