GM, Tesla partner to develop standard EV charger connectors

DETROIT - General Motors has announced a deal with Tesla that will enable owners of GM electric vehicles to recharge their batteries using Tesla chargers.
According to a media release from GM, the companies are collaborating to standardize charger connectors beginning in 2025.
GM says the collaboration will expand access to charging for GM EV drivers at 12,000 Tesla Superchargers throughout North America.
“Our vision of the all-electric future means producing millions of world-class EVs across categories and price points while creating an ecosystem that will accelerate mass EV adoption,” said GM Chair and CEO Mary Barra. “Not only will it help make the transition to electric vehicles more seamless for our customers, but it could help move the industry toward a single North American charging standard.”
The Tesla Supercharger Network will be open to GM EV drivers starting in 2024 and will initially require the use of an adapter.
Beginning in 2025, the first GM EVs will be built with an inlet for direct access to Tesla Superchargers without an adapter.
In the future, GM will make adapters available for drivers of North American Charging Standard-enabled vehicles to allow charging on CCS-capable fast charge stations.
GM says it will also integrate the Tesla Supercharger Network into its vehicle and mobile apps, helping drivers quickly and easily locate, pay for, and initiate charging at available Tesla Superchargers.
“Our mission is to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy,” said Rebecca Tinucci, Tesla’s Senior Director of Charging Infrastructure. “Giving every EV owner access to ubiquitous and reliable charging is a cornerstone of that mission.”
In January the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission announced plans to add more EV charging units at the Mahoning Valley and Glacier Hills Service Plazas which are across from each other along the toll road in New Springfield, as well as the Great Lakes and Towpath Service Plazas in Broadview Heights.
Electrify America and Tesla Supercharger stations are available at several service plaza locations on the Ohio Turnpike. A Tesla Supercharger Site - which includes eight Superchargers is available at the Blue Heron and Wyandot at milepost 76.9 in Genoa.
