Ohio & Mahoning Valley - Health departments in all three Mahoning Valley counties will be receiving grants for mosquito control activities courtesy of the Ohio EPA.

The Ohio EPA is awarding a total of $816,000 in grants to 41 Ohio counties for mosquito control activities including $127,000 to remove scrap tires, which could become breeding grounds for mosquito larvae.

The Mahoning County Health Department will receive $25,000, Trumbull County Combined Health District will receive $21,000 and the Columbiana County Health District will receive $19,900. Additionally, the Warren City Health District will receive $18,920.

These funds specifically target mosquito surveillance, larval control, adult mosquito control including spraying where mosquito presence poses a risk to public health, community outreach and breeding source reduction including trash and tire removal.

Additionally, the funding will help mitigate the spread of mosquito-borne viruses such as Zika, West Nile and La Cross Encephalitis.
