Lakeview votes to place 'critical' levy on November ballot

CORTLAND, Ohio - The Lakeview Local School Board has voted to once again place a tax levy on the November 2023 ballot.
During the past few election cycles, multiple attempts were made to get levies passed for the district, but voters rejected all of them on the ballot. Now, district officials say they're getting down to the wire.
"[This levy is] critical for the survival of our district. We're definitely reaching deficit spending at the end of our five-year forecast," said Lakeview Superintendent, Velina Jo Taylor.
According to Superintendent Taylor, the district has not had a levy passed for the past 13 years, and if this one doesn't pass, the district could possibly go into a "financial emergency."
Lakeview Treasurer, Sean Miller tells 21 News this is a 4.9 mil levy and would cost about $14 per month for someone with a $100,000 house, $28.50 a month for someone with a $200,000 house, etc.
Despite concerns due to previous levies failing on the ballot, district officials are expressing hope that local taxpayers will see the need for this levy to be passed.
"I'd like to emphasize the fact that Lakeview Schools has a tradition of excellence. We pride ourselves on the fact that we have excellent education here, so we hope the community will continue to support that excellence," Superintendent Taylor said.
