Sexual battery trial of Austintown Trustee set to start this week

YOUNGSTOWN - Jury selection is scheduled to begin Monday in the sexual battery trial of Austintown Township Trustee and former resource officer Steve Kent.
Defense attorney John Juhasz filed a motion to change the location of the trial, arguing the publicity surrounding Kent's case will make it difficult to seat an impartial jury.
Court officials say they won't make a decision on Kent's request for a change of venue until an attempt is made to seat a jury.
A brief filed by Senior Assistant Attorney General Kara Keating acknowledges the media coverage surrounding Kent's case but argues that does not mean the court will be unable to find impartial jurors.
Kent is charged with sexual battery after allegedly engaging in sexual conduct with a Poland Seminary High School student while he was a resource officer for the school.
Last week, Judge John Durkin ordered prosecutors to hand over to Kent's attorney a DVD recording of the alleged victim's statement that was given to a social worker at Akron Children's Hospital.
Earlier this year, Kent's attorney complained in another court filing that prosecutors had designated that Kent was not permitted to review some of the evidence in the case. Judge Durkin's order allows Kent and his attorney to view the DVD interview with the alleged victim.
