A power outage which left three-fourths of Bristol Township in the dark and caused the local schools to cancel classes on Wednesday is being blamed on a wandering raccoon.

A representative of FirstEnergy tells 21 News that the raccoon came in contact with some equipment early that morning, knocking out electricity to hundreds of homes and businesses in Trumbull County.

Bristol Local School officials notified parents, staff, and students of the class cancelation shortly before 6 a.m.

According to FirstEnergy, as of 6 a.m. Wednesday, more than 1,200 Trumbull County homes and businesses were in the dark in seven communities including Bloomfield, Bristol, Farmington, Green, Gustavus, and Mecca Townships. More than 1,000 of those outages are in Bristol Township

Power was restored at around 6:30 a.m.
