A case of COVID has caused the closure of the Austintown Senior Center for the holiday week.

According to Township Administrator Mark D’Apolito, the decision to close the center on Westchester Drive was made after a reported COVID exposure.

Although the closure means the cancelation of public activities through this week, volunteers will use the center’s kitchen on Tuesday to debone turkeys prepared by the Mahoning County Sherriff’s Department as part of holiday meals for senior citizens who are unable to cook, are homebound or do not have resources to get dinner.

Sheriff Jerry Greene tells 21 News that they are cooking thirty turkeys for delivery on Wednesday.

The Senior Center is expected to reopen Monday, November 27 depending on the availability of staff.
