Crews continue repair work on bridge connecting East Liverpool to West Virginia

Crews in West Virginia are hard at work on repairs to a highly-traveled bridge that connects East Liverpool to Chester West Virginia.
Currently, crews with the West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH) are testing and evaluating the span so that repairs can be made and the Jennings Randolph Bridge can be reopened to traffic as quickly as possible.
Engineers will be working over the weekend to plan further repairs.
The bridge was built in 1977 using T-1 Steel. During a special test on the bridge, a few cracks in the bridge's welds were discovered, which could cause safety issues later down the line.
Additional cracking may be present inside some of the bridge's steel box beams. Currently crews are making access holes inside the box beams to allow inspectors to check inside the bridge to confirm whether or not more cracks are present.
If more cracks are found additional repairs will be needed.
