Ohio State Fire Marshall Kevin Reardon is kicking off National Burn Awareness week by highlighting the risks flammable liquid present in our daily lives.

National Burn Awareness Week spotlights the importance of handling flammable liquids safely. Flammable liquids are a common, yet overlooked hazard in both the workplace and in the home.

Improperly handling these liquids could result in burn injuries. According to the American Burn Association, nearly 97% of individuals who suffer burn injuries will survive. However, many of those survivors go on to have serious life-long physical disabilities and adjustment difficulties.

Reardon offers the following tips to remain safe while handling flammable liquids:

- Properly store flammable liquids in approved containers

- Keep flammable liquids away from heat sources and away from children

- Use the correct type of fuel for each item (lamps, heaters, etc.)

- Never pour flammable liquids near an open flame or while equipment is running
