With Spring in its early stages, volunteers from around the Valley and Youngstown State University (YSU) joined forces to make a positive impact on the environment.

Members from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), the YSU Bass Team and the Mohawk Valley Bass Club partnered to help clean up Mosquito Lake.

Collectively, the team bagged around 30 bags of trash.

The event began around 9 a.m. and focused primarily on the area near the causeway ramp in Cortland.

"The things that come off the road and the things that people throw in here, they're infecting the wild life," Denny Cornman, the president of the YSU Bass Team. "The fish get affected by it, the flora get affected by it and not to mention it's unsightly."

Cornman says that trash like broken bottles and Styrofoam regularly get thrown around the lake by drivers passing by the lake.

Mosquito Lake is one of the largest lakes in Ohio with more than 7,000 acres of surface area, according to ODNR.

Some species of fish that live in the lake include walleye, bass, crappie and northern pike.
