Another snag has been hit in the ongoing efforts to cleanup East Palestine after the Norfolk Southern train derailment last year.

Sulphur Run cleanup operations by Norfolk Southern have been put on hold as the team reassess how it plans to clean the sheen in the creek.

According to a news release from the East Palestine Emergency Response Team, the project will not resume until the EPA approves additional methods of containment to ensure the sheen in the creek is properly collected.

Norfolk began the removal of residual oil discharged during the derailment by conducting stream, sediment washing and physical removal of sediments on Monday.

Meanwhile, the Ohio EPA says the process of returning the natural flow of water back into Sulphur Run will continue and it is expected to take several months.

21 News has reached out to the Ohio EPA for more information about the cleanup efforts stalling and what comes next.
