1999: One of Youngstown's two charter schools, Eagle Heights Academy, has received 386 applications for 100 openings.
Duferco Farrell Corp., which took over Caparo Steel on Broadway Avenue in Farrell on Jan. 1, has almost doubled its employment to 230.
The Mahoning County grand jury has issued a superseding indictment charging mob boss Lenny Strollo with attempted murder in the assassination attempt on county Prosecutor Paul Gains.
1984: Gov. Richard Celeste reappoints Michael Del Bane of Hubbard to a new five-year term as chairman of the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio. He notes that in 1982, the PUCO granted 62 percent of the rate hikes sought, which dropped to 40 percent under Del Bane in 1983.
Dr. Marvin Goldberger, a former Youngstown who is president of the California Institute of Technology, speaking at Rodef Sholom Temple, says no technology, including President Reagan's proposed Star Wars defense system, can defend against all of the possible nuclear threats from America's enemies. A treaty banning nuclear arms in space is the best defense, he says.
The Rev. Edward Stanton, 54, a Catholic priest widely known for his social activism in the Mahoning Valley, dies of cancer in St. Joseph Hospital. He was especially active in the Save Our Valley movement that arose from the closing of area steel mills.

1949: Strouss Memorial Hall is dedicated by Dr. Sidney Berkowitz at Rodef Sholom Temple in memory of Clarence J. Strouss, saying, "his name will forever be on our lips and in our hearts."
A Youngstown man is fined $100 and sentenced to six months in jail by juvenile Judged Henry Beckenbaugh for causing the abuse or neglect of two children by taking their mother out of the home.
United Airlines announces plans to increase its service for Youngstown, giving the city 10 daily flights, effective April 24.
