Youngstown University's University Archives has a new exhibit titled "The YSU Black Student Experience."

The exhibit is located on the 5th floor of Maag Library and features the contributions and achievements of Black students at YSU.

The idea originally came from the late Carol Bennett, the assistant provost for the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

YSU Senior Tilisia Williams, a student assistant in Maag Library, spent the past year interviewing more than 30 alumni about their experiences at the university. The interviews were transcribed and added to YSU's digital archive, and a team from the University Archives went through past yearbooks, The Jambar newspapers and other collections to add more about the Africana Studies program.

"The exhibit is mostly centered around the Black experience here at YSU and we wanted to document that more," Williams said. "It was in the archives but it wasn't available to students to find openly, now it is."

About 50 people attended the opening reception.
