'Good luck, you're gonna need it': Second defendant in deadly Warren arson receives sentence
The second of three defendants in the case of an arson that claimed the life of a 16-year-old Warren girl has learned his fate on Wednesday.
Brendan Daviduk was sentenced to 32 years to life in prison on charges of Aggravated Murder, Attempted Aggravated Murder, Aggravated Arson, Aggravated Burglary and Tampering With Evidence. He must also register as a violent offender.
The charges stem from the deadly arson that killed 16-year-old Chassidy Broadstone in January of 2023. Prosecutors say the motivation for the crime was an ongoing feud regarding some of the children in the home.
Chassidy was not involved in this feud.
During the sentencing, members of Chassidy's family took the stand to deliver impact statements regarding her death.
One of Chassidy's sisters, Jazmine Dickey took the stand very briefly to say, "I am at the point where we do not need this trial. Just let me have 15 minutes alone in a room with [Daviduk] and we can get this all done and over with."
Chassidy's aunt Marsha Broadstone took the stand to give her tearful impact statement where she too grilled Daviduk for his actions that morning.
"You, sir, are a coward. My hope is that prison serves you with the same mercy you showed those girls that morning. And we are the Broadstone girls forever," Marsha said.
Chassidy's stepfather James Stein took the stand and addressed Daviduk telling him that he himself has served time in prison and he knows what it's like and said he could only hope Daviduk could turn his life around.
"I hope you find some kind of peace, man I do. Because you have a lot of years to think about it now. Don't go in there and repeat the same things over and over again. Change it while you're in there. Find the Lord, find peace, because that's the only thing that's going to help you live a better life," Stein said.
Daviduk himself did not address the court or the family, but Judge Sean O'Brien ended the hearing with six powerful words for Daviduk: "Good luck. You're gonna need it."
Daviduk, along with co-defendants Patricia Zarlingo and Zackary Gurd went to the home on the night of the crime with the intent to steal items from it. Prosecutors say Gurd brought a can of gasoline to the house starting the blaze.
Daviduk is the second of these defendants to receive their sentence, with the first being Zarlingo who was sentenced immediately after accepting her plea deal.
Zarlingo was sentenced to life in prison with her first chance of parole after 35 years. Gurd was originally scheduled to be sentenced August 13, but this has since been reset with no official date given at this time.
