International Towers residents returning home

YOUNGSTOWN - The area around the Realty Building can officially reopen, including International Towers. More than 100 people who have been displaced from International Towers can start moving back into their apartments.
The first wave of tenants arrived Wednesday morning after months of uncertainty. Residents tell 21 news they are grateful for the organizations that helped them every step of the way, and grateful to be able to move back home move back home.
"It's a good feeling to be back at your own house," said William Kinnard, International Towers resident.
Another resident said he is ready for his life to go back to normal after being displaced for more than two months.
"A day of excitement, you know getting my personal back into my apartment and getting back to normal," said Roderic Jennings, International Towers resident.
So far, the first group of residents moved back into their homes. Volunteers said the remaining residents will be coming back in waves throughout the rest of the week.
Volunteer agencies, like Goodwill, United Way and Catholic Charities, helped move belongings into apartments as those living here checked in at the front of the building. The agencies said residents have been grateful for all the help they've received.
"It was supposed to be for two weeks, now now these individuals have been out of their home for two months, so they're really excited to be back home. And I'm really happy that the community has stepped up," said Grimilda Santiago, United Way community impact manager.
Mayor Tito Brown has been speaking with communities agents, and says as downtown reopens, there is an organized process put in place.
"Instead of just all at once, we have you know just sign in, get their keys, get a gift, a welcome home basket. So it's just the way that the community agents that came together, we just feel it’s a better and more productive way to do it organized," said Brown.
Around 50 volunteers helped with this initial group of people moving back into their apartments.
