1999: For the first time in more than a decade, the Beeghly Center at Youngstown State University is sold out as more than 6,000 screaming girls welcome Justin Jeffre, Drew and Nick Lachey, and Jeff Timmons, members of the "boy band," 98 Degrees.
Gander Mountain, an outdoor retailer specializing in hunting, fishing, and family camping gear, is opening its 30th store at the Eastwood Mall in Niles.
August was a bust at Youngstown's two swimming pools, North Side and Borts. Temperatures broke 80 degrees only twice before the pools closed on Aug. 10. Total attendance at both pools for the summer was 10,153, compared to 10,749 a year earlier.
1984: Enrollment in Trumbull County's 11 Catholic elementary schools and John F. Kennedy High School has been the most stable of the Youngstown Diocese's six counties over the last five years. Elementary enrollment is 3,100 this school year, with 650 students at JFK.
