A Capital Airlines passenger plane christened “Youngstown” attracted much attention.

1999: Don Hanni Jr., the outspoken former chairman of the Mahoning County Democratic Party, sends a letter to former president Jimmy Carter suggesting that he run for a return to the White House, arguing that he would be a stronger candidate against the Republican frontrunner, George W. Bush of Texas, than either of the current Democratic hopefuls (Al Gore and Bill Bradley). A spokesman for Carter, who is 74, says the former president has no intention of running again.

More than 70 people take canoe rides on the Mahoning River in Warren, from Perkins Park to Stewart Park, as part of the Trumbull County MetroPark's promotion of the river as a recreational asset.

The Ohio Department of Corrections is negotiating a $15 million deal to have CiviGenics, a Massachusetts private prison company, run the Northcoast Correctional Facility in  Grafton for 21 months. 

1984: David Wildes, 42, co-owner of the Elm Beverage Shoppe, is shot and killed, and two other people are wounded during an attempted robbery. Police recovered a 12-gauge shotgun that the two robbers dropped as they fled.

The Sharon Planning Commission rejected a request to change the zone for the 8-acre Shenango Inn property from single-family residential to business district commercial.

U.S. Sen. John Glenn says a test flight on Aug. 22 of the B-1 bomber on which he was a guest passenger and pilot was supposed to perform the same low-speed test maneuver the plane was performing a week later when it crashed. Glenn said the maneuver was canceled on his flight because time was short. 

1974: General Motors Corp. is beginning to wonder if it is adding to its labor problems at its Lordstown assembly plant by paying workers $750 a year in college tuition, which is producing a workforce with higher educational levels and equally higher ambitions. 

Supt. James Watkins reports that enrollment at Canfield schools remains virtually unchanged, with  2,920 students on opening day compared to 2,925 a year earlier.  

1949: An estimated 50,000 to 60,000 people turn out for an air show that marks the dedication of $600,000 in improvements to the Youngstown Municipal Airport. More than 12,000 cars choked the roads in Vienna Township, leading to one of the worst traffic jams in the Youngstown district's history. 

Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. informs President Truman that it will accept his suggestion for a 10-day delay before instituting a pension plan for another round of pay increases. 

Mahoning County's Common Pleas judges say Ohio's 100-year-old constitution should be streamlined through a 1952 constitutional convention.
