1999: The Pennsylvania Charter School Appeals Board rejects an appeal filed by the proposed Shenango Valley Regional Charter School, which had its application rejected by the Sharon City, Hermitage and Farrell school districts on the ground that the proposed charter school offered nothing that wasn't available at existing public schools.

The Wick-Pollock Inn, owned by Youngstown State University, cannot reopen as a hotel unless a $1.2 million debt between the former operators and the city of Youngstown is resolved.

The Ohio Department of Agriculture uses three planes from Ontario, Canada, and the Ministry of Natural Resources, operating out of a Beaver Township airport, to drop a half-million rabies baits aimed at raccoons in northeastern Ohio.

1984: The Ungaro administration's plan to raze the 62-year-old Youngstown Hotel at 311 W. Boardman St. would cost $90,000, and there is little prospect of getting any of the money back.

The Trumbull County Agricultural Society soundly rejects four issues presented to the board that would have changed aspects of the fair board's operations.

The Lordstown General Motors complex's car and van plants will return to operation after negotiations with the plant's local unions. The UAW is striking at 13 GM plants, but none are in Ohio. 

1974: A gunman and his woman companion surprise a West Side couple in Tod Homestead Cemetery, force the husband to lie on the ground, and rob them of $53.

Burglars cut a two-foot hole in the roof of the Kroger Foods store on McCartney Road and carried off an undetermined amount of cash after cutting open the office safe.

 Ohio's new abortion control law goes into effect, requiring abortions to be performed under safe and sanitary conditions and with the informed consent of the woman. A person under 18 cannot have an abortion without her parent's permission, but neither can a minor be forced by a parent to have an abortion. 

1949: Staff Sgt. Quentin Freed of Youngstown, a World War II vet and survivor of a Nazi prison camp, is one of eight crewmen to survive the crash of a giant B-36 bomber at Fort Worth, Texas.

Some 1,100 students and faculty members at Hayes Junior High hold their traditional Constitution Day observance around the flag pole.

A crowd of more than 4,000 lines downtown Niles streets for the city's first annual pet and toy parade sponsored by the Niles Boosters Club and Chamber of Commerce.
