1999: After nearly a month of contentious discussions, leaders of Youngstown State University and its alumni association signed a 14-point plan that they said would strengthen and broaden services to YSU's 70,000 graduates. 


A 61-year-old Girard woman is undergoing inoculations to prevent rabies after being attacked by a squirrel while walking to her mailbox.  Officials say rabies is unusual in squirrels, but a chipmunk with rabies was recently found in Trumbull County. 


The Ohio Supreme Court upholds a death sentence for Sidney Cornwell for the 1996 drive-by shooting of Jessica Ballew, 3, on Oak Park Lane.  


1984: Niles Police Capt. Aage Madsen says there have been no downtown break-ins since the department returned foot patrols to the area on Aug. 14.


The Trumbull County Planning Commission is required to complete a survey on whether county buildings provide access for handicapped people. 


More than 150 former students gathered at the Avalon Inn to honor David Howland, the founder of the National Forensic League Chapter at the Rayen School. Howland, who taught at Rayen from the 1930s to the 1960s, celebrated his 90th birthday. 


1974: Ronald A. Daniels of Youngstown is elected president of the National Black Political Assembly during a meeting in Columbus. Daniels teaches African studies at Hiram College. 


An Aliquippa man held on armed robbery charges remains at large after escaping from the Mahoning County Jail on a makeshift rope. Another escapee was captured within minutes. 


Walter Brennan, an actor who perfected the role of grizzled sidekick to big stars in western films, dies at 80.


1949: The Mahoning County Budget Commission reduces Youngstown's real estate tax by 40 cents per $1,000 valuation to $20.60.


The Ohio Controlling Board approves the construction of an $800,000 addition to the Youngstown Receiving Hospital on E. Indianola Avenue.
