Suspect accused of stealing 84-year-old's purse also accused of stealing car on same day
21 News recently reported on a woman whose purse was stolen after she was mugged at a beauty salon. Now, we've learned the same suspect in that case is also accused in a separate theft that happened the same day.
According to a police report, about 45 minutes after receiving the report at the salon, police were called to the 3300 Block of Freemont Avenue where police say a suspect, identified as 46-year-old Angel Martinez stole a vehicle.
The victim told police his grandfather's car was in the driveway when Martinez rode into the driveway on a bicycle and started pulling on the doors of the vehicle trying to get inside.
Police say the victim came out and told Martinez to get away from the vehicle, but he was able to get inside and drive away. According to the report, the car was running at the time.
Shortly after receiving this report, officers were told they found Martinez when they pinged the location of the cell phone of the woman in the purse theft case.
When police attempted to speak to Martinez, he allegedly fled through the woods, but officers were able to catch him in the parking lot of Saint Christine's School.
Police were able to identify the cell phone Martinez had as that of the woman at the beauty salon. It along with the stolen purse were recovered in the school parking lot.
Meanwhile police found the stolen vehicle in a Walgreen's parking lot.
Martinez was charged with auto theft and robbery and was scheduled to be arraigned Monday morning.
