SEBRING, Ohio - The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is working to clean the remainder of hazardous contaminants from the Sebring Industrial Plating Building in Sebring.

Sebring Village Manager Tim Gabrelcik tells 21 News within the past few months, the EPA had told him that they were going to work to clean up the remainder of contaminants in the building.

Gabrelcik told us Chromium was found to still be present in the facility.

Additionally, Gabrelcik says the EPA mentioned the possibility OF funds to have the building torn down.  The Ohio EPA tells 21 News it had received $4 million in funding for two abandoned buildings with hazardous material inside.

About half of that funding will be used to support the cleanup efforts for the Sebring Industrial Plating facility.

Gabrelcik said if the village didn't get the funding, they would look into having facility condemned and torn down.

The EPA began investigating the contaminated building in 2021 when over 38,000 pounds of hazardous waste was found illegally stored inside the facility.

Some of that waste included cadmium and hydrochloride acids. Three people were charged in connection with the incident.

The EPA tells 21 News it will be coordinating with local authorities for any additional work needed at the site.
