More than 350 Warren business leaders attended the dedication of Packard’s huge new Plant 12 and its research center.

999: Youngstown Superintendent of Schools Ben Magee says the Youngstown Youth Academy is behind in rent payments by $10,000 and faces eviction from the former Harrison School on the city's East Side, which it has been using as a boarding school for juvenile offenders.
Karen Hackenberry, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Mahoning Valley, says the organization will mark 65 years of operation in the Valley. It was organized by 12 women in 1934 as the Maternal Health Association.
A union leader at ERICO Michigan Hanger Co. in Niles says workers were shocked when the company's Solon parent announced the plant on Summit Street would close on Dec. 31 at a loss of 156 jobs. Michael Bednar said workers were given no hint that the company was in trouble.
1984: The Youngstown State University football team's chartered US-AIR DC 9 makes a hard landing in the fog at the Erie Airport on the way home from beating Austin Peay 16-13 in overtime at Clarksville, Tenn. The plane skittered off the runway and abruptly stopped in mud, but none of the 53 players or eight coaches were injured. They finished the trip home by bus.
Howland Local Schools Superintendent Nick Macris tells voters the district must seek passage of a 4-mill operating levy despite passage of the state income tax because the state is not distributing funds fairly.
The Ungaro administration is considering selling downtown Youngstown urban renewal land at half its appraised value to spur development.
1974: New and more generous terms for merging Sharon Steel Corp. with NVF Co. of Pennsylvania are announced. The Youngstown Area United Appeal opens its campaign for $1.8 million with $200,000 already pledged.
1949: Judge Erskine Maiden Jr. says the Community Chest is setting up an emergency aid program to handle hardship cases likely to arise from a prolonged steel strike.
