21 News is your place for politics — and tonight 21 News is hosting a debate Tuesday night at 7 p.m. between the candidates for Mahoning County Prosecutor.

The debate will take place in the 21 News studio between incumbent Democratic candidate Gina DeGenova and her Republican challenger for the job, Lynn Maro.

21 News 5pm anchor Lindsay McCoy will moderate the debate.

Tonight's debate will be broadcast on wfmj.com and available to watch on the 21 News mobile app. It will also be live-streamed on the 21 WFMJ Facebook page. and on WFMJ YouTube Live. Immediately following the debate, it will also be available on our website and our YouTube channel.

The general election will take place on Tuesday, November 5, and 21 News will cover all the races, from the presidential race to county-level races to local issues.

DeGenova has been Mahoning County Prosecutor since January of 2023 when she was selected to fill out the remaining term of Paul Gains' term when he announced his retirement in late 2022.

ABOUT THE CANDIDATES

Gina DeGenova: A life-long Valley native, DeGenova grew up in Niles and graduated from Niles McKinley High School. DeGenova received her four-year degree from Youngstown State University and received her juris doctorate from Cleveland Marshall School of Law.

DeGenova worked as a general civil attorney in private practice prior to joining the Mahoning County Prosecutor's Office in 2005. She was the county's litigation counsel and lead counsel for the Mahoning County Sheriff's Office, the Board of Commissioners, and other elected officials. She became Mahoning County's Chief Assistant Prosecutor and was named County Prosecutor after Paul Gains retired in November 2022.

Lynn Maro: Born in Youngstown, Maro graduated from Ursuline High School. She earned her 4-year degree from YSU and her law degree from the University of Akron School of Law.

She worked as a civil litigation attorney at a private practice in Akron before joining the Mahoning County Prosecutor’s Office in the civil division until 1996. Maro currently works in her own private practice along with her husband, attorney Jonathan Schoenike. Their law firm handles civil, criminal, and appellate work.
