The Shapiro administration along with TSA, AAA and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) urges Pennsylvania residents to obtain a REAL ID-compliant ID or license before May to ensure hiccup-free domestic flights.

The federal REAL ID enforcement deadline is May 7 and while a REAL ID is optional within Pennsylvania state lines, it will prove to be hard to fly to other states or enter a military base without a REAL ID, passport or military ID after that deadline.

Since 2019 over 2.9 million residents of Pennsylvania have obtained a REAL ID driver's license or ID card.

"As the weather starts getting warmer, we know many Pennsylvanians have made exciting travel plans," said PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll. "With federal REAL ID enforcement beginning on May 7, your travel planning should include making sure you have proper ID to fly. If you want to keep using your driver's license or photo ID card to fly domestically, you'll need to upgrade to a REAL ID if you haven't already."
