Brookfield man completes jail sentence for endangering children

BROOKFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ohio - A Brookfield man has been released after serving 20 days in jail following what police believe was an alcohol-fueled disturbance at his home on Valentine’s Day.
Jeffrey Hume was also placed on one year of probation after being convicted of seven counts of child endangering.
Brookfield Township Police were dispatched to the home on South Stateline Road after receiving a report that Hume was allegedly intoxicated and destroying property. According to a police report, a caller, identified as Hume’s child, reported feeling unsafe due to Hume’s behavior. Police stated they had responded to numerous previous calls involving Hume and alcohol.
Upon arrival at the Stateline Road residence, officers discovered that Hume had left on foot, possibly to buy alcohol. Police located Hume at a nearby Circle K, where he admitted to being involved in a fight with another man at a Dollar General.
According to police, Hume, 38, also admitted to breaking windows and damaging property at his home. While officers were speaking with Hume, they learned that smoke was coming from his residence, and the fire department had been dispatched.
When police returned Hume to his home, officers reported that he became disorderly, yelling at a firefighter. Further investigation revealed that Hume had allegedly damaged the home’s wood-burning furnace, filling the house with smoke. Seven juveniles, including four of Hume’s children, were in the home at the time, according to police.
Officers described the home as being in deplorable condition, with broken windows, garbage, and dog feces throughout.
As he was being driven to the Trumbull County Jail, police say Hume became combative, repeatedly striking his head against the cruiser’s partition and kicking the door. He also threatened to harm himself upon arrival at the jail. Officers required assistance from corrections officers to take Hume into custody.
