BOARDMAN, Ohio - A Boardman man lost $9,000 after police say he fell victim to a bail scam over the phone.

According to a police report, the man received a call from a scammer impersonating his son who was accompanied by another scammer impersonating an attorney claiming the victim's son had rear ended a pregnant woman and was at fault.

Police say the victim was told his son needed $9,000 to be bailed out of jail and not to tell anyone else about this because it could delay his son's release from jail and the man told the scammer he'd need to wait until the bank opened on Monday.

According to the report, the scammers called back on Monday and told him to withdraw the $9,000 from his bank account and further told him not to tell the bank why he was doing so and say it was for home improvements if asked.

Once he got the money, the scammers told the man to convert the money into Bitcoin to pay for the bail. Police say he complied and was then told his son should be out on bond.

Police say the scammers called back the next day this time claiming the pregnant woman's baby died and the man now needed to pay $5,000 for funeral expenses and to cover the bond for a manslaughter charge against his son.

The man told the scammers he'd have to check with the bank to see if he had the money. Police say it was only after the man texted his son that he realized he was scammed.

At this time, no arrests have been made and no charges were filed in connection with the scam.
