2000: In religion news, the Rev. Ernest Ellis was installed as pastor of Antioch Baptist Church in Youngstown, and Dawud W. Abdullah was named imam of the Youngstown Islamic Center. 

Janet Ericsson Halecki, the mother of seven children, earns a four-year degree in elementary education at Youngstown State University in just two years, rather than four, with a 3.65 grade average.

1985: About 10 people lined up outside the downtown office of Metropolitan Savings Bank to celebrate the institution's reopening after 10 days. Among them was J.J. Cafaro, who said he was depositing $100,000 "as a symbol of my family's confidence in this institution."

Copperweld Steel Corp. in Warren says it is not economically feasible to bring its third electric furnace online, so until it is, the company will buy unfinished steel from an outside source to fill orders. 

Lawyers for Youngstown and minority employees in the Youngstown Police Department say they are close to agreeing to free the hiring and promotion of minority applicants. 

1975: The private collection of 60 works of art owned by Youngstown Dr. John McDonough begins an 18-month nationwide tour. 

King Faisal of Saudi Arabia, a staunch friend of the United States who also bankrolled a war against Israel, is assassinated by a man described by the government as a mentally deranged nephew. 

Indiana's Bobby Knight, a basketball firebrand with a burning desire to win, is named Associated Press major college Coach of the Year. 

  

1950: Dr. Harvey Walker, professor of political science at Ohio State University, tells the Youngstown League of Women Voters that Ohio should convene a constitutional convention to replace the one adopted in 1851.

Arturo Toscanini, dean of the world's great conductors, celebrates his 85th birthday by conducting the regular Saturday night concert of the NBC Symphony Orchestra.
