Youngstown celebrates 4th of July, First Fridays and Walk of Fame
The city of Youngstown had plenty to celebrate Friday evening, from fourth of July barbecue, to "First Friday's," and establishing plaques on the Youngstown Walk of Fame for five local boxing champions.
"We have so much talent from this town, i mean you know, from theater to the arts to sports broadcasting, artists of every media so we needed to start recognizing our people and talking about the ones who have given back to the community as well," Melanie Clark-Penella, Youngstown special events coordinator, said.
The walk of fame now features six honorees at Wean Park, including Kool and The Gang, who was honored with a plaque in 2024 and now Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini, Kelly "The Ghost" Pavlik, Harry "Dirty Harry" Arroyo, Jeff "Prime Time" Lampkin and Greg "The Flea" Richardson.
Clark-Penella tells 21 News the city would like to take the list even further.
"Kool and the Gang's the first, now we have all five boxing champs and our plan is to go all the way down the walk to across the Shuba statue on the Covelli entrance to the walkway," she said.
Clark-Penella added that next year's honoree will be announced sometime next week.
Food trucks could be seen lining the perimeter of the Covelli Center adding to the festivities of the evening.
"We've come so far from our first year and then as soon as dark hits then we have our 'becoming famous' fireworks display from the Market Street bridge," she said.
"Definitely for the fireworks on a night like tonight, I hope we get you know a couple thousand people later on to come out on the lawn and hangout but people hangout up around the city," Adam Lee, Youngstown Cityscape program director said. "And there's a lot of great viewing places, who knows but there's a lot of space down here," he said.
Clark-Penella said this is the fourth annual fireworks and food trucks festival and the success of the event was magnified by the fact that it also fell on a "First Friday."
