Poland student claims field trip cancellations made him target of retribution

POLAND, Ohio - Jeff Vrabel tells 21 News that he couldn't wait to go on field trips to a courthouse and to the Laurel Caverns.
That excitement faded when he learned he would have to pay for bus service to the field trip, something he had heard was no longer legal according to the Ohio Revised Code.
A portion of the Ohio Revised Code addresses fees for non-routine school transportation and states "No pupil charge shall be made for transporting pupils to and from educational field trips during school days..."
Vrabel says he brought that to the attention of the two teachers taking the corresponding field trips. "They both supported it, and backed me at the time. Then, the one teacher we were going to the cave with, took it to administration to which he said if you don't want to pay for the bus you don't go," said Vrabel.
Both of the trips were planned during school hours. But just days later all trips for the remainder of the year were canceled.
Vrabel says word then spread and he was the subject of backlash for his actions.
When asked what the reaction has been like towards him after the word spread the trips would be canceled Vrabel responded, "I've been the scapegoat. Everybody has come to me and complained and addressed their concerns to me. They threatened to beat me because of everything that has been happening."
We reached out to the President of the Board Education, Principal Snyder, and Superintendent of Poland schools but they didn't wish to comment on the matter.
While the superintendent didn't wish to comment in detail, he did say the trips were canceled for the remainder of the school year.
