A neighborhood group on the west side of Youngstown unveiled a mural that highlights the life of George Shuba, a former Brooklyn Dodger standout and Youngstown native.

Shuba's childhood home was located on Fernwood Avenue, and the wall of the mural faces the same street.

Shuba tried out for the Dodgers when he was 17 years old. His path would eventually lead to what's now called "A Handshake of the Century" with Jackie Robinson. The moment will be commemorated on April 18, 2021, with a life-size bronze statue dedication within Youngstown's Wean Park.

The Neighborhood Success Grant Program of The Raymond John Wean Foundation and the Rocky Ridge Neighbors' Mill Creek Maple Project helped to fund the project

Neighborhood residents were on site to give a $1,000 donation to the organizing committee of the Robinson-Shuba Statue Project.
