1996: Speaking at the B&O railroad station, President Bill Clinton pledges to push for $47 million to expand the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport as a cargo hub. 
 
U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant, D-17th, who had threatened not to support President Clinton for re-election, endorsed Clinton during his Youngstown visit. Traficant thanked Clinton for building the Youngstown Air Reserve Station into the largest C-130 aircraft base in the nation.
 
Edward Himes, 30, of Austintown claims his $45 million Ohio Lottery jackpot. Himes said his children can look forward to "a pretty nice life from here on" and he's going to be doing a lot of fishing. 
 
1981: Thousands of Youngstown area residents celebrated the nation's 205th birthday at July Fourth festivals and parades. 
 
The city of Warren is marking 50 years of using the former Perkins mansion as City Hall. The building is 110 years old. 
 
Four local men, Mike Gardner, Vincent Passella, Jim Fabrizio, and Frank Santore, are organized a reunion for area men who served in the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Depression.
 
1971: State Sen. Harry Meshel introduces a bill to legalize pari-mutuel betting in Ohio on Jai Lai, the 150-mph handball game played chiefly in Florida.
 
Dr. Jim Altiere is the Class AA winner in medal play at the Tippecanoe Country Club with a 69, besting Dr. "Chips" Bellino, who shot a 71.
