COVID fund deadline next week for Valley businesses

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Mahoning Valley business owners of Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana have one more week to apply for $2.5 million that was set aside for Ohio's counties.
Nicholas Coggins of the Trumbull County Planning Commission said he found about these funds just days ago and feels it's not fair that the opportunity is slimmed for Ohio businesses who need these funds.
"It's not something we forgot about or it got lost in the trenches," Coggins said, "We've never had it, they had it set aside but they didn't notify us."
He said he didn't receive a direct memo about the funds and found out about them through a press release on July 20th even though the application opened almost a month ago.
This is not the federal money that has been given to counties and cities around the state but is a separate fund that Ohio set aside for each county's local businesses.
The Ohio Department of Development, organizing the funding program, said they did a lot of outreach, but did not specifically notify every County Commissioner's Office.
Local businesses have until July 31st to apply for the funds to get them on a first-come-first-serve basis on the county level. After that, leftover funds will be available to the entire state.
Local businesses including restaurants, hotels, and entertainment can click here to be directed to the application.
Coggins said he would like to see the deadline extended but the state said they believe there will be enough funds to go around will continue to work on spreading the word.
