There's a new special addition to the Youngstown Public Library unveiled Monday called the "Family Engagement Area."

It's all part of the library's $27-million dollar improvement plan funded through local levies and the state's general library fund.

Library officials said The Family Engagement Area has been in the works for a decade and includes resources for all ages to learn and grow as a family.

"I'm the third library director to talk about doing this project," said Youngstown Library Director and CEO Aimee Fifarek, "So it is so thrilling to be the one to actually see it come to fruition."

From toddlers to adults, the center is a hub for everyone to learn and grow together while experimenting in spaces of their own.

"It's a place where families and responsible adults in a child's life can come together and learn through hands-on experiential opportunities," said Youngstown Library Chief Experience Officer Erin Phemester.

From the interactive play and learning area, where a child's imagination can run wild with a treehouse, lite brite machine and kitchen, to the recording studio for content creation...there's something for everyone to incorporate new technology.

Phemester said the idea of a "silent library" is a thing of the past as brand-new resources surrounded by literature will allow the community to engage innovatively.

The family engagement space will also include staff on hand to guide the experience and listen for new ideas from families to facilitate even more new resources in the library. A 3D printer will also be available in the coming weeks.
