Teamsters Union leaders rejected the city of Youngstown's "best and final" contract offer Monday afternoon.

The people who plow and fix the streets in the city of Youngstown said on Friday they are underpaid and overworked. After this rejection, the union leaders plan to picket in front of City Hall next Monday afternoon and demand that the city go back to the bargaining table.

Seven years ago there were 36 workers in the Youngstown street department who would do things like fill potholes and plow streets but now they are down to just 24. Many left for higher pay elsewhere. With their union contract now up, they feel they are being spread too thin.

"They've taken away any vacation in December, January and February. Now they are talking about no vacation in the summers because they don't have enough workforce," said Teamsters Local 377 Treasurer, Ralph 'Sam' Cook.

"They are either going to have guys not taking time off when they are fatigued due to snow removal if they are working 21 days straight because they don't want to lose the overtime or they aren't going to come out for the overtime at all," said Teamster Local 377 President, Steven Anzevino.

That means it will take much longer for city streets to be plowed. Days longer.

According to city law director, Jeff Limbian, the union rejected a fact finder's report addressing recommendations to the union's issues.

He says they've offered raises of up to 2.5% which are consistent with what other unions in the city received.

"We've given our last best offer which is better than the fact finder's report. We aren't certain what more they want. If they want to come back to the bargaining table we will certainly be happy to talk to them but we do not want to negotiate with them in the press," said Limbian.
