Police are trying to find out what happened to a husband and wife found dead at their Columbiana County home.

Officers in St. Clair Township were called to Summerset Drive last week for a welfare check, after neighbors reported not seeing the couple for several weeks.

St. Clair Police Chief Brian McKenzie says that when officers gained access to the home, it was "obvious something was not right," and there were early signs that someone in the home was deceased.

Upon entering an upstairs bedroom, police found 80-year-old Howard Gulutz and 73-year-old Sharilyn Gulutz dead.

The two had what Chief McKenzie calls obvious injuries.

A revolver was recovered from the scene. Police believe it belonged to one of the homeowners.

Investigators found no signs of forced entry to the home. Chief McKenzie says the Gulutzes had likely been dead for somewhere around three weeks.

The Columbiana County Coroner's Office is working to determine a cause of death for the couple.
