Niles Police: Mall substation will help officers along Route 422 business district

NILES, Ohio - The Niles Police Department has released more information about plans to increase its presence at the Eastwood Mall and help them perform its duties along the Route 422 business district.
As 21 News first reported Wednesday, the Cafaro Corporation announced plans to hold a ceremony on Friday to open the substation near the Mall Food Court.
On Thursday, the police department posted information on Facebook explaining that the station will serve as a high visibility office that will offer a computer workstation, so officers don't have to come back downtown to complete a report or fill out arrest paperwork after police calls in the 422 retail corridor.
The space also features a prisoner bench to secure arrested suspects and seating for meetings or taking a witness statement.
The substation will not be manned full-time, nor will any officers be taken from street patrol duties to man the station, according to the Facebook post.
Explaining that police conduct regular foot patrols and spot checks inside the mall, the substation will help enhance those efforts.
By providing this space, officers will be more visible at the mall while also still completing their regular duties.
The space, interior renovations, and vinyl wrap on the outside were all paid for by the Cafaro Corporation.
The only cost to the department was some equipment that the officers need to perform their jobs while in the office.
