1998: Youngstown Mayor George McKelvey, great-grandson of a man who founded one of downtown's major department stores, says history won't be repeating itself. The future of downtown is in government, banking, small retailers, and a link to nearby Youngstown State University.

For the first time since 1980, Ohio State is ranked first in the pre-season Associated Press poll.

Police on patrol in Boardman, Austintown, and Poland townships are getting computers in their cruisers that will allow them to communicate without what they're saying being heard over radio scanners. 

1983: Sam Mravich, 66, a Youngstown Steel Door retiree from Austintown, won  $734,218 as the holder of one of two winning tickets in the $1.4 million Ohio Lotto drawing. 

Two Florida banking executives have been indicted on federal charges that they illegally tried to take control of a Tampa bank in which Edward J. DeBartolo Sr. was the principal stockholder.
