1998: Ronald Holmes, 40, the only one of six inmates who remained at large after escaping from Youngstown's private prison on July 25, is recaptured in Buffalo.
 
Lawrence County commissioners agree to provide $12,500 toward a $175,000  grant to support anti-domestic violence measures, but  Commissioner Edward Fosnaught says he isn't convinced the county can afford continued funding. 
 
Some former East High School students are apprehensive about their transfer to the Rayen School and whether they will be accepted. Asked to write how she feels about  going to Rayen, one student wrote, "very depressing."
 
1983: About 150 Mahoning Valley residents went to Washington, D.C., for a protest over high unemployment in front of a White House, but President Ronald Reagan didn't hear them because he was out of town.
 
A 17-year-old Campbell youth who escaped from Girard police custody was killed when he lost control of his car while trying to elude Campbell police. 
 
Dr. Samuel G. Adornato says a letter from Columbus to his Poland home took six months to arrive because it was sidetracked to Warsaw, Poland -- twice. 
 
1973: A 30-year-old Warren motorcyclist is killed when he pulls into a school parking lot and strikes a chain stretched across the entrance. 
 
The executive committee of the Campbell Education Association approves a strike notice for Sept. 5, the first day of school, unless a new contract is reached.
 
1948: Temperatures in Youngstown reach 100 degrees for the second day in a row. Water pumping sets new highs, and crowds jam pools and parks. 
 
A  patrolman who became involved in a barroom brawl while off duty and the sergeant who covered up for him are suspended by Chief Edward Allen.
