Mahoning County Dog Warden spends over $220k on homeless dogs in 2023

MAHONING COUNTY, Ohio - The Mahoning County Dog Warden has had quite a rough year financially in 2023 spending over $220,000 on homeless dogs in the area.
According to a Facebook post from the Dog Warden's Facebook Page, the Dog Warden spent a total of $220,433.03 in just one year largely due to seeing more animal abandonment and neglect than ever before.
"Our stray intakes are at an all time high. These dogs have needed extra [tender love and care] due to their pasts. More so than ever before," the post reads.
The Dog Warden was able to get by this year thanks to Friends of Fido Mahoning County Dog Pound (MCDP).
Back in 2011, before Friends of Fido was founded, volunteers covered medical costs for pound puppies. If a dog was injured, volunteers would chip in to cover vet bills.
Once these volunteers found that the need was too great for just a small group to take on, Friends of Fido was established, and over the past 12 years, the organization helped dogs in need in many different ways.
This past year, Friends of Fido paid:
- $198,480.52 on vet visits
- $6,140.88 on heart worm treatments
- $10,642.28 on dog training
- $5,170 on rescue pull fees
"We want to not only thank Friends of Fido for the million different ways that they give our dogs every chance at the life that they deserve but we also want to thank everyone who backs them and ensures that they continue their mission to help the homeless dogs of the Mahoning County Dog Warden," the post reads.
