Youngstown City Schools to show 'Right to Read' documentary throughout August, September

The Youngstown City School District is partnering with Youngstown State University, the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County and the NAACP Youngstown branch to show the 2023 documentary "Right to Read."
Directed by Jenny Mackenzie and produced by LeVar Burton, the film follows the life of an NAACP activist, a teach and two families working to teach the next generation to read.
"We believe literacy is fundamental to unlocking lifelong skills and offering endless opportunities," said Jeremy Batchelor, the YCSD superintendent. "YCSD is committed to supporting initiatives that promote literacy and lifelong learning."
The free screenings will be held in different locations throughout August and September, they will have panel discussions about the necessity of literacy in a functioning government.
Screenings of the film will be at:
- The McGuffey Center at 3 p.m. on August 10,
- The Main Public Library at 5:30 p.m. on August 12,
- The Youngstown Event Center at 11 a.m. on August 17, and
- Youngstown State University at 3 p.m. for students and 5:30 p.m. for families on September 3.
A final screening of the film will be held in October at a to be determined time and location.
Additionally, United Way of Youngstown and Mahoning Valley will be there for giveaways.
Sight for All United and Vision to Learn will offer free vision screenings at select viewings.
