A parachuting tragedy claims two lives in a northeastern Ohio county. It happened early Saturday evening at the Cleveland Parachute Center near Garrettsville.

The Portage County Sheriff's department says Dan Mathie, 30, of Boardman and Sierra Thomas, 22, of Brunswick died after an apparent parachute malfunction, during a tandem jump.

Mathie, nicknamed "Danger" Mathie, was a bricklayer and parachute instructor with a wife and two children.

Cleveland Parachute Center is the same parachute club where Lieutenant Bob Magnuson of Canfield died in another accident three years ago.

Sheriff David Doak said the two were found about one mile away from the jump zone.

Witnesses said there were no problems immediately after they jumped, but that the main parachute and main canopy didn't fully open, and there seemed to be a problem with the cords that caused them to spiral.

The accident is being investigated, and it is believed that Mathie was using his own parachute, which is common for instructors.

An autopsy was conducted Monday showing that Mathie died from blunt force trauma to the neck.
