Working days are numbered for about 200 employees of an Austintown company that distributes frozen food to Giant Eagle grocery stores.

Sam Cook, Secretary-Treasurer for Teamsters Local 377 tells 21 News that the union has been informed that the Tamarkin Company plans to shut down its warehouse on Victoria Road as early as May 9.

According to Cook, Giant Eagle plans to move its local distribution to a plant in Solon, Ohio, putting 165 Teamsters as well as 40 or 50 non-union employees out of work.

Cook says that last year, the company said it would build a new $35 million building if the union agreed to a new five year agreement that included work rule changes, a lower pay scale for new workers, and an end to participation in the Teamster pension fund.

Workers rejected what Tamarkin said was its final offer last December.

Giant Eagle said that the final offer rejected by the union would have increased wages, maintained health benefits and added a 401K plan.

According to Cook, the union will meet with company officials next week to discuss severance packages with employees.

He says that although Giant Eagle has said it will close the Austintown facility when the current Teamster contract expires on May 9, they are negotiating to keep operations running until September in order to provide a smoother transition to the new warehouse.
