Jury selection had already begun in the case of 20-year-old DeVante Scott of Youngstown.

He's the man accused of firing at least one of the shots that shattered the window of then 9-year-old Kathryn Carter's home.

The bullet penetrated a chair and went through the young girl's back, hitting a rib and barely missing her heart.

It was late Monday afternoon when a jury was almost in place that Scott decided to plead guilty to improperly

discharging a firearm into a habitation and felonious assault in the April 2014 shooting.

Carter was sitting at her dining room table doing homework when she felt the stray bullet penetrate her back and exit her chest.

Carter spent five full days in the hospital and has since made a full recovery.

Scott will be sentenced at 9:30 Tuesday morning.

He could be sentenced up to 19 years in prison.
