A 17 year old is in the Trumbull County Juvenile Justice Center, accused of bringing a handgun inside his residential treatment facility at Children Services.
The teen was on an overnight visitation and then went to another home that had not been approved.
Police say he took a gun from this residence and brought it and six rounds of ammunition back to the children services facility.
Tim Schaffner, Executive Director of Children Services, says, "When the owner of that firearm discovered it was missing, he called our staff. Our staff immediately called Warren police. They came in and took possession of the firearm and the youth."
Schaffner says the boy is being treated at the facility for mental health challenges and he was not ready to transition to foster care. But at the same time Schaffner says the teen was not deemed to be a danger to others so he was not searched before entering the facility.
"Does the child have a history of threats to self or others, escalating behaviors, apparent thought disorders? He did not. No prior incidents," says Schaffner.
Schaffner says they are going to look at all aspects of the incident to see if changes need to be made to the visitation policies.
He says the residential facility is not a lock-down facility or a juvenile detention center.
The teen is charged with two felonies including theft of a firearm and illegal conveyance of a weapon onto the grounds of a detention facility or institution.
