Trumbull County girl rides bike for the first time thanks to older sister

LEAVITTSBURG, Ohio - Up until about two weeks ago, Brenna David of Leavittsburg had never ridden her own bike. The 11 year-old was born with Arthrogryposis. It's a condition of the joints and muscles that doesn't allow her to bend her legs. Despite undergoing about 20 surgeries, Brenna most likely will never be able to bend them.
"We had been trying to buy her a bike for many years and they start out at like $2,000 for the simplest bike and you know, my mom, being a single mother, raising us three kids, it was like $2,000, who has that to spend on a bike," said BrookeLynn Barr of Leavittsburg.
Brenna's big sister BrookeLynn found an opportunity to make sure her sister a bike. BrookeLynn is a senior at Trumbull County Career and Technical Center, where students must compete a senior project. She chose a hand pedal bike for her assignement.
"We didn't really go off of a plan actually. We just kind of looked at pictures online," said Barr. "So, it was kind of like brainstorming and once we got to building it, it was just kind of ok, let's cut pieces of bikes apart and go for it."
"I never really thought it would happen," said Brenna David.
But it certainly did. Brenna has been cruising ever since.
"It was an amazing feeling. Like, you know, I knew, oh my gosh I am going to be building this bike, but it didn't really hit me until it was built. Like the day she actually rode it, I cried," said BrookeLynn. It's a really good feeling because it sucks watching, having people tell you're little sister that she's different all her life and he not being able to do certain things, not being able to ride a bike. I mean, every kid wants to ride a bike. So, it was a good feeling to have her be able to finally ride one because of me."
