Canfield residents grade school superintendent finalists

canfield - The Canfield school district is using the web to allow the community to interview its three finalists for school superintendent.
Normally they would have a meet the candidates night at the school but obviously that can't be the case right now so Thursday night, people were able to learn a little about the three final candidates in a live online forum.
A 15 member community advisory group narrowed it down to the final three candidates who spent about 40 minutes a piece answering questions posed by parents and other community members. They asked how each would improve Canfield's already excellent rating.
Tim Myers, who is orginally from salem, says it's that designation that got him interested in the job.
"I have many relatives in Columbiana County it would be like coming home. So the excellent school district and the fact that it would be like coming home are why I am interested in the Canfield school district as well as being a part of a great school district and make it better," said Myers.
Myers has spent the last 16 years as a superintendent for the Van Buren school district.
Timothy E. Saxton says being a Canfield graduate himself is the main reason he wants to come back.. He says he wants to look at the school's report card and focus on improving things like K-3 reading.
"We need to make sure our young readers are successful and if they are struggling we have the things in place to make sure that is eased upon them. As a young student there were times I struggled to read. I think with the right person and right program and extra touch, you'll see improvement," said Saxton.
Saxton has 11 years Superintendent experience. He's currently at West Branch schools.
Joseph Knoll has been the superintendent at Marlington schools in Alliance for 9 years. He sees Canfield as being full of opportunity.
"Opportunities to improve teaching and learning. To integrate some technology. I'm a big STEAM, STEAM guy. We've done some great things here in that arena and I'd like to see that transfer over here to Canfield," said Knoll.
People who tuned into the virtual meet the candidates stream are asked to fill out an online survey about the finalists. That will be up until 8pm Friday.
