July 15th federal/state tax deadlines approaching

The coronavirus led to many things being canceled or postponed this year.
But one thing that will likely never be canceled is paying your taxes.
Normally the day of reckoning to file your Federal tax forms is April 15th.
This year the deadline was pushed to July 15th because of the coronavirus.
And the IRS won't accept COVID as an excuse for you to not pay Uncle Sam what you owe. If you still aren't ready you can still file for an extension.
"That extension will give you until Oct. 15th to file a return but it won't extend the time you have to pay. Any amounts that are due should be paid by July 15th however, if you can't in full you should pay as much as you can by July 15th to avoid any interest and penalties," said Melissa Libert of Baxter & Associates in Austintown.
You can work with the IRS to get on a payment plan if you can't pay in full.
Expecting a refund? Well, you can expect a delay. The IRS is still behind because employees are just now getting back to work after being told to stay home for a couple of months. That's created a backlog.
"Occasionally the irs needs to do some investigation. They need to check if a child really lived with this taxpayer, is this income really legitimate? But if there's no one there to check it sometimes those returns are in limbo and people are waiting on a very large refund but there's no one there to do it," said Andrew Reigstad of Tax 29 in Boardman.
Those getting refunds will actually be paid interest, dating back to April 15, if you file on time.
If you need some help with tax forms most tax preparers in the valley are extending their operating hours just like they normally do in April.
They can be especially helpful if you experienced a big change in income or employment.
