LORDSTOWN, Ohio - The Lordstown battery plant that's expected to bring 1,100 jobs to the area is taking shape.
General Motors sent pictures of the steel construction underway Wednesday at the Ultium Cells LLC battery cell manufacturing facility.
It's a joint venture between GM and LG Chem to build batteries for electric vehicles. The plant will be located at Tod Avenue Southwest, right behind the Lordstown Motors plant.
"We are excited about the progress that our team has made, and we look forward to the finished product – a nearly three million square foot plant," said Ken Morris, vice president of Autonomous and Electric Vehicle Programs. "Our joint venture with LG Chem will allow us to produce advanced battery cells in Lordstown, with the goal of reducing battery costs to accelerate EV adoption and ultimately benefit customers."
The batteries will eventually be used in 22 electric GM models by 2023. They are supposed to get 400 miles per charge. Officials hope to start production by 2022.
