A 17-year-old accused of murdering an 89-year-old Warren woman was arraigned Monday.

Shamar Askew pleaded not guilty to charges connected to the shooting death of Ruth Lewis.

Lewis was killed in February 2021 after shots were fired into a home on the 3100 block of Starlite Street NW.

She was shot while sitting in the living room where her family had gathered to plan the funeral of her son, who had recently died of a heart attack.

Police say they don't believe Lewis was the intended target of the gunfire.

Askew is facing two counts of murder, a count of tampering with evidence and a count of improperly discharging a firearm.

His bond was set at $500,000.
