1998: The Ohio Supreme Court appoints retired judge Dominick Olivito of Steubenville to handle two cases in the Mahoning County fraud probe, making him the fourth visiting judge to be assigned to the investigation. 

Youngstown State University's $96 million general fund budget is predicated on the university maintaining an enrollment between 12,300 and 12,700.

Salem plans to cap 16 fire hydrants in the Stewart Road area of Perry Township because of low water pressure but says the caps would be removed if water rates are increased by 25 percent to finance a $750,000 improvement project. 

1983: Lawrence County, Pa., will switch from paper ballots to all electronic voting, perhaps as early as the election this November.

A chase involving a Poland Township police officer and an erratic teenage driver ended with a collision between the car being chased and one driven by Richard A. Yereb, 37, of Canfield. Yereb suffered fatal injuries. 

Michelle Fagnano, 16, is crowned Miss Niles by last year's queen, Mary Mollica, at Waddell Park. 

1973: Mahoning County Common Pleas Judge Sidney J. Rigelhaupt warns Sheriff Ray T. Davis that he'll order a grand jury investigation unless the sheriff straightens out his appraisal methods for the property being sold at auction. 

Campaigns in the Mahoning County May primary were among the quietest in memory, with only $57,625 spent by all of the candidates on the ballot. 

1948: Three drunken North Side men who entered the Madison Avenue firehouse at 1:30 a.m. and awoke the firemen demanding a ride on a fire truck got a different ride in a patrol wagon that took them to the jail downtown. 

During a trial in a suit filed by some Youngstown parents to block the closing of the Delason School, other parents testify that they see an advantage to having their children attend class in a modern school building.
